What's a Pocket Spring Mattress?

2026-02-13

A Pocket Spring Mattress is a type of mattress built with hundreds (or even thousands) of individual springs, each encased in its own small fabric pocket. Unlike traditional open-coil systems where springs are connected together, pocket springs work independently — giving the mattress better flexibility, support, and comfort.

How Does a Pocket Spring Mattress Work?

Inside the mattress core, each spring is wrapped in a small cloth pocket. These fabric-encased springs are then stitched together and placed beneath the comfort layers of the mattress.

Because the springs are not physically connected:

  • Each spring moves independently

  • The mattress responds precisely to body weight and pressure

  • Movement on one side doesn’t easily transfer to the other

This independent movement is what makes pocket spring mattresses especially popular for couples.
